Just pretend it's not there and it's not happening. I see some crazy stuff going on where I live and in the world and I just can't do that. I have to look. I have to try to do something about it

I don't watch the news. I fill my life with those things that are productive to my growth or create and enhance the beauty that surrounds me. In order to counter negative energies; you must fill it with positive ones. The World will continue without me. If there is something important I need to know; I trust it will be brought to my attention. As a result, I have been much happier as a person. I don't pretend it's not happening...but I feel I do my part by creating beauty or positive energy...and adding something beneficial to the World in this manner. Our "drop in the bucket" may help in ways not always known to us. Why add more strife?

What can you do about it? Are any of the problems new? Aren't we using the same solutions to the same problems over and over, even though they do not work?

I think the solution is to break the cycle so aptly described 200 years ago. Here it is.

"The average age of the world's great civilizations has been 200 years. These nations have progressed through this sequence:
from bondage to spiritual faith;
from spiritual faith to great courage;
from courage to liberty;
from liberty to abundance;
from abundance to selfishness;
from selfishness to complacency;
from complacency to apathy;
from apathy to dependency;
from dependency back again to bondage.”
-- Sir Alex Fraser Tytler (1742-1813) Scottish jurist and historian

There are 2 critical points, when we get abundance, we get greed, selfishness and corruption, which can lead to war.

Also, when we reach bondage, we struggle for freedom, and war can happen at this point also.

Somehow we need to keep people renewed within the cycle of "spiritual faith and thankful abundance". However, this is what we are losing in today's society. Spiritual faith is heading to atheism. We are wasting so much of our wealth in "War" and "Entitlements" to people, that our debt will lead to poverty for our nation.

How to turn it around? It is an intellectual battle. It will take time. It will take a new generation once we start the process, for this generation already has its beliefs. We have to learn to feel like our founding fathers did to understand what the true basis of liberty is.

Yes, it's called disengaging. Most of us do it from time to time. It is increasingly difficult in this age of constant communication to get some time for yourself. But it's ok to turn the world off and let your mind wander. The only thing you have to do is file your taxes. The rest is all voluntary.

Be a hero, I never happened to see situations around me that made me shut my eyes and pretend it's not there. If something were to happen, I would definitely do something about it. Never know, I might make it out alive, and maybe I won't, as long as I attempted to save a person. This person will thank you with his/her life and you won't regret it. :)

sometimes when it's personal you have to not look, you can't change the way people are and it's not always easy to accept certain things, but keep an open mind. that way you can be of help if needed

I guess you have to in your case. Why not do something about it? Break down those walls and send invites.

that's the easy way out. i am glad that you choose not to take the easy way out. neither do i. it's easy not to care but it's hard on the conscience knowing that you can do something in your own little way to effect change :)
