I have heard a lot of bad thing about SOME (not all) modelling agencies and how they make you pay for photos and photo sessions before they take you on then never give you any work. Always check with the local Better Business Bureau in teh US or Trading Standards in the Uk or Similar organisation elsewhere.

I think a better starting place before you go to agencies is if you have a friend who is reasonable with a camera (do not have to be a professional or even that good just okay) Just take 100 photos of yourself in different poses, clothing and backgrounds then pick out 10-20 nice photos. You can then use this as a portfolio, and even better instead of printing them which cost you money every time, host them on a website and get some business cards print with the website address on and just hand these out instead. This is a far cheaper way of doing it and with no RISK. You should never have to pay to get a job if you do there is a high chance it is a scam.

However if you would like a personal portfolio site please contact me and I will set you on up for free. I can design you a fully personalised flash website with as much or little information and then host it for you. This site can contain a gallery of your photos, personal information, list of work, contact details, etc or if you prefer just a couple of photos and nothing else. It can be password protected and all images will be protected as is humanly possible, or the photos can be available to download.


Examples of work can be provided on request. Just message me here if you want, I am a professional website designer but have lots of free time (and enough money) so I am currently doing free sites for small bands, small artist etc, basically anyone who could not afford them otherwise. I have my own hosting server so can offer hosting servers or you can host the site yourselves. No images sent to me will be used for anything other than your site and I will not give anyone your detail or link to the site. Start out with small things. Contact your local mall. Malls always have small fashion shows. You can get involved with those. Once you are into that, you begin hanging out with other people that want to be models. They will each have other bits of information on how to get into the business, cuz they are all trying to figure it out too. So you can discuss it together. You also have the benefit of getting expereince. And being on stage introduces you to the public, and who knows, maybe you will have to stop looking and someone will find you.

go to join a model agency. beware of fake model agency. there are more fake model agency than real ones around. beware of agency that spot talent on the street and those that collect money to do a digital make over or force you to buy things or force you to take courses or ask you to pay yearly membership fees or force you to do stuff or take nude photo or force you to do anything against your will or ask you to be social escorts or sex worker. if anything sounds too good to be true it probably is.

be 6'4, don't eat, look angry all the time , make sure you wear a siz 0, and be from a foreign country........be found walking in a park in Germany, or sitting under a tree in Clogne, have a really grungy rock star boyfriend (OPPS! you only get him after you are famous)........or you could walk it all over New York to the agencys and be told no time and again.......

So here is how to use the information below. If you are in New York or plan on being in New York, here are some contacts for various agencies in the city. Be mindful that each agency has a different way of handling new talent, so if you are looking for representation, i suggest calling the agencies ahead of time and asking them how they work and what they would like to see from you. Most will ask you to send in Poloroids or a copy of your book and/or work. You can also ask when they have their open calls. During open calls, you can just walk in and they will tell you right away if they think that you are the kind of model they are looking for. When you go to an open call, wear simple clothing, small heels, very little make-up and be sure you have clean hair. Bring a sweater or a jacket in case it's cold.

Now, you do not need to spend money on building a book until you get an agency. Agencies will want you to build your book with them -- unless you are lucky enough to know photographers willing to shoot you for free.

Also, remember your audience. If you are going to see a fashion agency, do not bring a book that is filled with nudes, glamour or fetish work in your book. This will only turn them off and make them think you are not serious about fashion. If you don't know the difference between fashion and any other type of work you may have done, try to remember that if it doesn't look like it came out of a fashion magazine, you should probably leave it out of your book. It is better to go without any images than to go with bad images.

Finally, remember that modeling is a business and if an agency doesn't like you, it's nothing personal. It is just their business decision that your body is not something that they think they can sell. That's just the way it is. Don't be discouraged by one or more rejections. Keep trying. If, however, you find that no agency is willing to pick you up, then it may be time to face the fact that modeling may not be the career for you. Modeling is just a job -- nothing more and nothing less. If you can't make a living at it, it would be better to find this out early on and then find something else.
