Some answers are correct, as far as they go, and comical.
The laws of Physics have again been proven, that there are no 'FREE' lunches!

BUT, here are steps you can take to relieve your gas bill, to reduce use, and to reduce friction, so the moving parts run easier!

1. keep it tuned up and specifically tuned, for the environment you are in! High altitudes vs. low, Long cruises at speed, vs. stop 'n go... Empty vehicles, vs. fully loaded ones. every 100 pounds of added weight is about 1 tenth of a mile per gallon penalty.

1a. Tire Pressure!!! low tire pressure can cost 15% in economy!!!
1b. We got four of the little valve stem meters, that are Green when our tires are at 33-36 PSI, and red when under 33PSI! A $6 set, at Pepboys... Now, a quick walk around the car as we get in...

2. Take a safe driver improvement course, free, up to $40, on the web. Anything to improve YOUR skills, will result in better economy! Plus, an Insurance DISCOUNT!

3. Some of the new cars since 1998 mandated the exclusive use of Synthetic Oils and lubricants. AMSoil doesn't 'flash' (up to 1300 Degrees F!) and deposit crud on the moving parts of the engine, and it reduces friction by some 4 to 8%, as it is thinner, but, doesn't contain Parafin, and 50% non-petro products to help control all the bad properties of petroleum oil, ('flashes' at 250 Degrees?).

Been using it since 1976 in my aircraft, boats, motorcycles, work fleet of trucks and cars. I never will trust Mobile Oil, again, for their rip off of 1/5th synthetic, in 4/5ths petro chems, in Mobile 1, that made them millions, but left motorists busted all over the country!

I prefer AMSoil for the oil changes only once every 27,500 miles, with one filter change at 13,500 miles! Full warranty on the engine!

Also, run the transmission, power steering, and, rear axle lubes, by AMSoil that will exctend their life about three to five times longer!

Everytime you get gas, pull the receipt, print the mileage on it.

Later, divide the gallons into the miles for an idea about your mileage for that fuel-up. compare with the past ones. Keep a vehicle diary! Fleets do!

Dramatic changes not caused by heavy loads, or severe duty, should be looked into, there might be a mechanical problem...

As always, there is no single magic potion to 'cure' the problem!
Being risk-takers, humans always look for one!!!

But, the real solution is a bit more knowledge, and a bit of work!

A low resistance air filter can often save fuel. Those Tornado devices seem not to work very well, but some people get some small results, but usually only by accident. Remember, one mile per gallon is a huge difference. For me that's 25 extra miles in a tank full of gas. With $3 gas that is about about $5 worth of free gas in a tank. Keep your tires properly inflated and tune your vehicle as recommended. Align the wheels when you need to.

I'm not sure how simple you are looking for but :

1) Cyclone devices on intakes do a little to help but they're a pain in the *** to install.
2) Put pure nitrogen into your tires it helps about 1.5 miles per gallon because nitrogen molecules are inert and allow less "air" to diffuse through the tire wall (about $5 per tire).
3) Keep your tires fully inflated at all times.
4) Spoilers help cut down on high speed drag
5) Change out any steel part to aluminum, change out any aluminum part to titanium (this is really getting into lowering mpg but it gets expensive quickly )

Mainly just weigh out how long you plan on owning the vehicle and determine over the course of that lifetime if the part you are buying will outweigh the cost of gas saved or just make you feel better about saving the environment for your kids.

Yes - a bicycle rack and a bicycle. You don't need to drag 3500 lbs of metal with you absolutely everywhere you go. Not only will it save you fuel and money, but it will improve your cardiovascular system, which increases your sexual perfomance. Also, the added calories burned from riding that bike will make you more attractive to the opposite sex, so that added performance could really come in handy, especially if the other party is travelling in a group of similar-minded friends.

You could bolt a transit pass onto your key ring and take a bus or train whenever it is possible.
If you want something that bolts onto a car you are out of luck. In the cutthroat world of car making if there was such a saving device it would be on every car that they make.

Put a block of wood behind the accelerator pedal to keep you from speeding. Increase the tension on the accel pedal to keep from making jack-rabbit starts. Install shoes on your feet and walk anywhere under a mile.
