I'm not exactly sure that you mean floorboards, I suspect you mean laminate flooring, The quick answer is NO WAY
If you mean that you have a solid floor which has carpet on it, and it is your intention to have solid wood flooring on top of the solid floor , then the carpet MUST go, The laying of a wood floor on a solid fl;oor must be done by experts familiar with this type of work.

No, but you can lay carpet onto a floorboarded floor.

Also, if you use a little common sense, surely you could have realised that carpet = a moving, uneven surface.

Hence, the boards would be moving up and down depending on where pressure is being applied due to the carpet moving underneath it.......

if it is a click floor yes as long as the carpet is in the pretty good shape.... many floors today are floating floors which means that it is not nailed glued or affixed to anything and can be removed...... but it is best if you do remove the carpet first.. live in a rental and want wood floors instead then cover the carpet at least when you move you can take your wooden floor...

If you don't like the carpet ......then go for it. I don't like the other answers here as they are far too cautious, they don't know how crappy your carpet must look. Start nailing...NOW.
