If price isn't too much of an issue I would say try for North Beach, it's a very cool area near shopping, bars, lots of Italian restaurants. It is supposed to be safe especially compared to other areas, like the Tenderloin, which everyone will tell you to avoid. If you go to the Fodor's website there is breakdown of all the neighborhoods. Also try yelp.com for all kinds of really cool reviews of things in SF, I was supposed to move there but it didn't work out, that's why I know all this stuff. Ah, well. Good luck to you!

If you're looking for something affordable, I'd recommend looking at the East Bay (Oakland, Berkeley). You can easily commute to San Francisco by taking the BART train. Berkeley is a popular destination as it has its own attractions for young folks (lots of university students there).
If you do have your heart set on living in SF, the Mission District may be a desirable option. It's filled with the best Mexican food, used bookstores, thrift shops, starving artists, non-profits, clubs, etc.
Check out Craigslist to get a feel for the different neighborhoods & price ranges.

SF is very expensive.
look at www.craigslist.com for info on housing, jobs, events, etc.
I live in Antioch, which is in the East Bay; it's about an hr from the city, if there is no traffic. I rent a 2000 sq ft house w/ a private pool, spa, backyard and 3-car garage for $1650/month. However, it takes awhile to get to the city. BART takes about an hr, but is very convenient. You would definately need a car. Oakland is not a good place to live. Neither is Hayward. Parts of Berkeley are ok. Piedmont, Lafayette, Pleasant Hill are all safe in the East Bay. Not sure about SF itself. The castro is very interesting and fun place to be. I've heard bad things about the Mission District from a woman who's son is a cop there...she thinks it isn't safe. If you're looking for fun & city life, check out craigslist and see what people are saying in the city.

I travel to SF about 3-4 a year & what always strikes me is - how damned expensive parking is. If you have a car, parking has to be one of the biggest issues. But motorbikes get a better deal (SoMa)
Personally, I've considered moving to SF - may do so, if I get a job offer out there. If I do move, it'll either be to a suburb at the end of a BART line, or a loft somewhere downtown (and trade the Corvette for a Triumph Speed Triple !).

There are several nice neighborhoods, but they are VERY expensive. Just take a look ay Craigslist
For instance, a nice 2-bedroom in the South of Market area is
more than $2000.00/month (3000-4400)
Most people prefer to live in the East Bay (Berkeley, Walnut Creek,Orinda, Lafayette,El Cerrito) and use public transit to take advantage of the sights and sounds of San Francisco
