The Ramones, The Damned, The Sex Pistols, The Buzzcocks, X
I think there is an arbitrary line between "punk" and "hardcore" too ...
No band after oh say 1990 should really be called punk, all musical movements have a finite chronological window to be original. After a certain time there is no authenticity, only re-enactors. It's similar with today's mallgoth culture, which has nothing at all in common with Bauhaus, Gloria Mundi or Siouxsie.
I agree too that punk is an attitude, which is why I don't understand why so many people who identify with the "DIY" ethos of punk tend to be big government socialists looking to play Robin Hood. Kind of a contradiction.

I think punk music is more of an attitude, and not a particular sound. That being said, there are a lot of 'punk' bands. And there are alot of bands that people THINK are punk, but really aren't at all. I consider the old-school punk to be more authentic, and true to the 'punk' genre. The cookie-cutter 'punk' bands of today are more about fitting into an image of punk for maximum profits, rather than living the lifestyle and having punk beliefs and attitudes.

There were only two real punk bands: The Ramones, and the Sex Pistols. Everyone else was some kind of offshoot of punk...although I would give special mention to the Clash who were more post-punk but still one of the greatest bands of any of the -punk subgenres.

Joey Ramone is going to rise from the grave to beat the crap out of everyone who said Green Day, and he's bringing Sid Vicious with him.
