Computer: Compaq 5360

A buddy gave me a hard drive with a bunch of MP3's on it and I want to set it up on my computer. I've attached the cable (serial cable...is that the lingo?) that connects to my main hard drive and have attached power as well....this all according to the instructions in my Compaq manual. As well...I have the little bridge on the pins on back set to "slave". Now...I can't see the drive...doesn't show up when I'm in windows Explorer(?). Is there a step/steps that I'm missing here?

Thanks,

G

Compaq computers don't use master-slave jumpering for IDE hard drives. They use a scheme called "Cable Select" where the drive's position on the cable controls whether it's the master or the slave. All IDE devices in a Compaq computer should be jumpered as Cable Select (usually CS) or they won't work.

Yeah, the next thing you need to do is set it up through BIOS.
As your booting there should be an or some key to hit depending on which version of BIOS you are using.

I wish I could walk you through it, but they are all different.
From there you'll look for hardware and then Primary IDE drive should list your hard drive... Make sure the Secondary IDE drive is listed as well (your secondary)... It should have the GB next to it.

Hope this helps!

First it's called a IDE. Second all you have to do it set your hard or cd drive which ever is on that same IDE Cable. The middle connector shounld be your Hard drive with your Windows on it your C drive or your CD drive that shounld be set for master and other one shounld set for Slave. I recommened you pur your hard right on top netoghter C drive on bottom and the other on top and have those on there on there own IDE and the cd drive on it's own.

be sure the primary hard drive is set to "master" and is indeed in the correct location on the cable (the end) and the slave is in the correct position (the middle).....then reboot the machine and go to "computer management" (right-click on My Computer and go to Manage)...then choose "disk management" on the left

You will need to scan for the new hardware.
Right Click on "My Computer" Click Properties.
Click "Hardware: tab, click "Add Hardware Wizard"
Should guide you thru.

If it dosent show up, you will need to check the bios to see if the drive is detected.

Are you on XP? or 98?

get another cable and install each harddrive as master and each one with a seperate cable, this way they will be faster
