I actually do this every day. An open crucible allows all the gas and residue to escape that might otherwise contaminate your test. Else it would wind up on the crucible top.

The intial heating is mostly about removing any excess water that is in the crucible by boiling it off. The lid needs to be removed so the water can be removed into the air.
