Help! I have a Compaq 5360 I baught in 1999. Don't use it for much except recording guitar tracks and internet. I've done a full system recover on it...reloaded everything. Still doesn't seam to be working very well, and the hard drive is NOISY...making that belabored "creaking" sound. Is my hard drive going bad?

A hard drive should last about 7 years. Of course, they fail at any point. You never know.

But YES, your drive is failing, and you should consider replacing it, or getting a whole new computer. You see, why spend $100 on the old RIG when you can use that $100 toward a new computer. Even the cheapest computer today will be an improvement over your old machine.

For a desktop, I recommend that you consider one of the DELL computers. Aim for a Pentium 4 with 800 FSB. Check the Dimension series. Start off with 512 MB of RAM and you will be pretty happy. With a Flat Panel LCD Monitor, you should be able to get a system for under $800.

If you are in a hurry, then consider the deals at Wal-Mart. Get their HP or Compaq.

Good luck

Yes and yes. Its probably going bad. One thing you can try is to take it out and shake it a little, (dont bang it). You should hear something rattleing around, make sure when you shake it that the rattle does not get stuck, you want it loose when you put it back..

Thats whats worked for me on my laptop, when it told me that it could not find the dard drive...

My advise is to get another and get the data off that one that you want to keep... That way when it does finally fail, your all set and wont lose anything over it.. ( use the bad one as a secondary, and let the PC use the entire thing for ram),

most likely yes.....that is usually a sign that it is about to crash....a good hard drive should be silent for the most part...I would suggest backing up anything you want to keep and then buying a new hard drive (prefer Seagate) and start fresh with a new install of the operating system....good luck....also try to keep the system clean on the inside....blow it out with a can of air every few months, especially the fans...=)

it does. hard drive does wear and tear after use. as it is 7 years since you bought it, it will make the creaky sound. my laptop started creaking after 2 years only and the computer got very slow. i changed my hard drive and its perfect now. make sure you have enough empty space in your computer so that there is efficiency.
