Pre-Beirut Lebanon, before President Regan sent peacekeeping troops to keep Christians from massacring Moslem women and children while Israelies looked on with indifference; did America really have any serious problems with the Arabs? The answer is no, in fact we were allied with Usama bin Laudin fighting Russians in Afghanistan and Saddam Hussein the Iranians. During Beirut, we chose sides in the Arabs eyes, thus the mess we are in now. Just like when we supported the Shaw in Iran, against his, the Iranian people.

Do you think if we start minding our own business in the Arab world and quit supporting Israel, would that help in renewing our relations with the Arab world so we can start traveling safely around the world again, and not be afraid to go into tall buildings?

The mission of the Marines had been a humiliating failure—not because they failed in their duty but because the political backbone in Washington was lacking. The Marines had arrived in 1982 with all sides welcoming them. They left in 1984 despised by many and the object of attacks by Muslims. Even relations with Israel were strained, if not in Washington where a sympathetic Congress granted increased aid to the Jewish state to compensate it for the costs of its bungled invasion, then between the Marines and Israeli troops who had confronted each other in a realpolitik battlefield that was beyond their competence or understanding. The Marine experience in Lebanon did not contribute toward a favorable impression of Israel among many Americans, especially since the Marines would not have been in Lebanon except for Israel's unprovoked invasion.

Got it, Gimlet! All the events of the present are the on going moves of a never ending chess game . Begun long ago. We are only the pawns, The Kings use us at will. The culmination of the game will be the New World order.

I know what side you are on.

The Maronite Christian militias are the ones that were in the camp at the time. Could it be that they were just sick of being treated as dogs by the Muslims so a few did a bad thing.

What I have seen in the last year that so called massacre was the men of the PLO hiding behind women and children.

We did go into Lebanon as peacekeepers and we lost all most 400 men.

You need to read more because this stuff did not start in Beirut or with Israel. It started with a mad man that thougt he was talking to God.

I think the damages and indifference is so huge that i doubt it will ever be trusted by the arabic world.

We support israel because of our interests in the region. And we are mutually depended on each other. For lack of better terms, we uses each other to our advantages. So, for the near term, we will never quit supporting israel. Now, when there is no more energy dependancy of middle east oil. I expected changes in the relationship.

I know it sounds bad but that's how I see it.

Good Question.
One only needs half a brain to figure this out. (Sadly lacking in our world today) We seem to think that the Arab world is composed of a bunch of halfwits, and we can do anything we like in the region, without them retaliating. There are only two solutions for the conflict in the Middle East.
One, the complete destruction of Israel, which is not going to happen with the West supporting it.
Two, Israel MUST somehow seek 'acceptance' in the Middle East. If this means they must show a lot of humility and ask for forgiveness for their aggression since Israel was formed, that is the price of peace. (And they must abide by ALL the UN resolutions since 1948.) The UN has been pushing for the second solution, (the logical one) but the US and Israel somehow think that they are going to win Israel's 'acceptance' through war.
Sorry Bush and Olmert, it's NEVER going to happen. All you are doing is creating more hatred, not only toward Israel, but toward the rest of us, who have NOTHING to do with your STUPID policies.

The only thing many intellectuals have proven over the past while is that you can be smart and still have very dumb opinions when it comes to politics.

The truth of the matter is that ones policies (whether foreign or otherwise) should not be predicated on the issue of whether someone will "love or hate us". If so, then that opens one to being taken advantage of.
Rather, foreign policy should be based on whether it is right to do so, and damn certain people's opinion.

And the truth of the matter is: it a) makes sense to support Israel and b) it is right to support Israel.

Also, as is clear to anyone paying attention, being "pro" certain elements does not make one immune from being targets of their alleged anger.

Israel and the blind support the US gives it has always been the major source of the problem.

Of course it's simpler to dress it up in a good guys/bad guys guise so that the majority of the US public can 'understand' it.

Yes, mostly. But I see no reason not to support Israel -- just not to the extent that those attached to the Holocaust or the Book of Revelation would have us do. We should support Israel as if it were just another country. Which it is.

You are not asking a question - you are advancing an agenda. Perhaps you could look thru the eyes of a patriot and remove your question, or be reported by Edna Bambrick.

The best way to explain most of this is saying......the enemy of my enemy is my friend......and if it is not necessary, Israel does not get involved in anything that has to do with that reason......they are so hated there, only in defense of their country will they do anything
