By "muffle" I presume you mean mushroom, with the stem and big spreading cap at the top.
There are several effects at work here. First, there is the rapid expansion of air under heat and pressure. That takes on a spherical shape from the ground up. The bottom part of the sphere is flattened by the ground. This expansion creates outward rushing wind reaching hundreds of mph, depending on the size of the blast.
Second, all that heat and pressure rushes outward, creating a comparatively low pressure in the center of the blast. At which time, the outward rush of wind reverses itself and becomes an inward rush of wind heading back into the center of the blast.
Third, all that inward rushing wind collides at blast center and, aided by the heat that is still there, is lifted skyward carrying debris and vaporized stuff with it.
Fourth, when the plume of upward air and stuff loses some energy, at higher cooler temperatures, the upward forces dissapate to the point where skyward motion ceases. But there is still more stuff rising from below; so it has to go somewhere. As a consequence, the rising stops, but the spreading begins. That's when the mushroom cap is formed.
The mushroom shape is not exclusive to atomic explosions. Large conventional explosions can create the same shape; and for the same reasons...but to a lesser extent.

After the bomb explosion the fireball begins shooting upwards at 360 feet per second, reddening and pulsing till it cooled.
The characteristic mushroom cloud or muffle shape is caused by this fireball cooling down into radioactive vapor at around 30,000 feet. The reduced speed causes the immense material to spread and thus the shape.

A big force slaps the thing all over at once. This is like smashing a beer can on your head. It just smashes.
