not timing belt the timing

your question is a little abstract, but let's see if this helps. at the point where the transmition meets the engine, there is a small "window", kind of a hole in the trans. case, ussually has a small black plug with a small handle, enough to get your fingers on. this is a window to the flywheel, and on it is a set of marks used to line up timing. once you have found this window, rotate the engine until it lines up with the center mark, this will be top dead center(cyl 1 is at the top).
another way to check tdc is to remove the spark plug from cyl 1 (far right) and put a thin rod in the hole, rotate the engine until this rod reaches it's highest hieght, but understand, this shows cyl 1 at it's top, but does not assure tdc(cyl 1 will be at it's highest twice for each time it comes to tdc).

You question with the additional info has me a little confused. Are we talking about the time belt, or the actual timing of the engine? The timing is computer controlled and cannot be adjusted, The timing belt turns the cam shaft. Get a repair manual. It will tell you all about this. If you are not sure beyond this point, take it to a repair shop.

find top dead center with piston 1 all the way up on the compression stroke, finger on hole helps figure compression stroke also the distributor rotor should point to plug number 1 mark the timing gears in this position before you remove old belt to confirm this is correct.

Before you take the other one off mark the gears with a marker.
Ive done this on older cars and works fine.

Take it to a shop.
I was just on Alldata and you need special tools because Ford doesn't use timing marks.
It looks very complicated.

Ignition timing??
It is not adjustable. Preset at factory.

It would go where the other one was. Call a mechanic.
