The song represents a man's struggle to maintain composure and to deal with the death of his father.

Phil wrote the music for BOR when his Dad was in between nursing homes and hospitals dying. Phil wrote all the melody, chords (the music) and then gave the music to Robert Hunter to add lyrics. At this time, phil was driving back and forth between the Dead's recording sessions and shows and the hospital and nursing home where his dad was dying. Phil practiced singing and playing the song as he sat with his father during the final hours.

Yeah... I've thought about this song before, but never really came to any conclusions about a whole mesage.

In part, I think there's a focus on the senses ("any window") and how people can't make sense of your senses for you ("what do you want me to do, to do for you to see you through?").

The second verse is the same thing. ("feel your way") is like using you intuition. ("maybe you'll find direction around some corner where it's been waiting to meet you") signifies doing without knowing.

This is the only worthwhile meaning that I've noticed. It's only the first part of the song. I'm not even convinced about it either, because the rest of the song doesn't follow my idea (as far as I can tell).

My ex-husband was a deadhead. He died 7 years ago from a stroke at age 33. He had a minister friend that was also a deadhead and so that minister had the funeral service and played keyboard and sang "Box Of Rain". So now, whenever I hear that song I think of Mike...RIP.
