I wash, rewash, have even tried baking soda. I don't know what else to try. It is mainly the towels and dishrags, they have a mildewy smell. How do I get rid of it?

I want to get rid of the smell, not cover it up with pine sol or smelly laundry detergent and sheets (although I have tried more detergent and sheets, it still doesn't help; as soon as they get wet again, they stink bad)

If your towels are older meaning 1yr or older then the smell might not be removable. It's a fact of life that over time they develop a permanent smell. You can slow this process by using a towel warmer rack which warms the tiles and promotes fast drying which is key in preventing the mildewy smell.

I would hang them in the sun for hours and then rewash...the sun will kill all the bacteria in them and oils from dish towels...
I think you will be pleased with the results.
You might also try making your load of towels smaller and make sure you remove them from the dryer as soon and they are dry.

If you have any Lysol spray, try spraying to towels while they are hanging in the sun...

I have the same problem as clean towels sit in the kitchen drawer. One solution I have found is I wash my kitchen towels more often, usually every other day I change kitchen towels.
And I finally threw out the old, cloth and handmade potholders that were stinky...

I had the same problem......I tried oxyclean laundry additive and it helped alot. Just keep trying different products until you find something that works for you.....the kind of water you have is most likely the culprit...my water is artisian well water which is high in alkalinity...so just keep trying things, you will eventually find something that works. Good luck, I know how frustrating stinky laundry can be.

USE AMMONIA

wash in HOT....use regular amount of detergent and a cup of AMMONIA

do not inhale the ammonia, it is dangerous

it will not fade your colors, or harm your material

dry quickly, dry in heat (the sun on a hot sunny day is your best option) if not sun, let them go though 2 drier cycles

Before you wash let your dirty things air dry so all the moisture is gone if you keep a hamper for clothing and hold your do not put them in the hamper wet.
Also something that will help is bleach for whites and bleach alternative for darks.

have you tried leaving them in the sun for a full day to dry? my friend had this problem & she actually used a bathroom mildew remover. this worked. of course then she had to rewash them with fabric softener, but give it a go, it might work for you too.

try a little borax & bleach in wash, and make sure that you are getting them really dry, before folding and storing. Also don't wash body and dish towels togeather.

Not sure if this will work on mildew smells but it does work on smoke. Try a can of coke or pepsi with your soap.
