For you first pedal, go with BOSS. Just go into a guitar center and play a few to see which one really does it for you. Most boss pedals are pretty versatile, and they're really easy to use and well built. Most are around $100. Even if you don't play Metal, the Boss "Metal Zone" pedal is great. It's got a lot of tone control, and sounds good with just a little overdrive, or a whole bunch.

Didgtech has some great processors. They have a butt-load of factory presets (so you can sound like metallica, chuck berry, clapton, hendrix, etc.) and they also have a recording loop, drum machine, wah pedal, and volume pedal that's built in. The sound is far better than buying a single distortion pedal. I used to buy them seperate but I found that with a processor it's like having fifteen or more pedals all rolled into one. They are easy to operate and everything to. The cheapest place you can buy them is at musicians friend.com. Check it out though you won't be disappointed.
