Actually the multiple wives rule is pretty tricky. At one point, the Qur'an says a man can have multiple wives, so long as he treats them all equally. At another point it says it is impossible to treat multiple wives equally, thus disallowing multiple wives in the minds of some readers.

This is a matter of some debate today.

As for the unequal treatment of women - the same thing shows up in virtually every major religion of the time. Witness the fact that women were lumped in with property in the Christian Decalogue, or the traditional wedding vow (still often used today) that a woman should obey her husband, while no corresponding vow is traditional for men.

This is why we must know that morality is not a one-time law, but must continually be reevaluated as times change. Some things are constant, but not everything.

I took history of the middle east fool I know this one! That happened right after a war He made the law because there were so many extra women with dead husbands. He gave the men who could afford it the option of taking on more than one wife. It just kind of stuck. But now since the number of women has caught up (Slightly there are stiil more women then men) It has been cut back to four. But most men only have one or two. Only the rich take on four or even more SOMETIMES if you have influence in your community. But the wives are allowed to divorce if they cannot afford them or they are neglected.. It's complicated the wives must each have their own room and the time spent between them must be equally divided so one wife don't feel left out. ect ect.

Firstly he didn't have all nine wives at the same time...his first wife was his only wife until her death. In fact he did not consumate many of his marriages but they were marriages in name for reason of tribal loyality, to ensure certain tribes wouldn't war with each other. As for the current ruling on 4 wives. It actually says that it is best to only have one wife and IF you can't control yourself then you may take additional wives, but you have to treat them equally. And hey at least there is the limit of 4 unlike the mormons that that can go to 30 plus. Now that is twisted and sick.

As for one husband for the woman..you need to be able to prove who your child's father is...again it has to do with the tribal connection.
