Yes, it's true. It's called the McClintock effect.
It works like this. There are two kinds of females, the "drivers" and the "driven" based on the pheromones they secrete. The menstrual cycles of the driven are reset to the cycles of the drivers over time. That is why at the start of the academic year the women in a dorm are on different "schedules" but are more or less synchronized at the end.
