As a matter of habit, I keep all personal bill statements and receipts for three years. It is not necessary to keep them that long, so the choice is yours.

In a file, I have the original contract when utility account first opened. I save one or two monthly statments each year, going back only 3 yrs.
Each month I save that month's statement until the next month's statement is received. Our utility company tracks usage for a full year on our statement. Otherwise, I don't think utility statements really have much financial value.
Keeping a monthly statement won't help establish good credit history.

I keep most of my basic bills for 3 months. If I have any questions or concerns about a bill, I will keep them until it is resolved. I also check each statement to be sure that everyting I expect has been credited.

Also, if you are making any automatic payments via credit card, I will keep those bills until payment in full has been acknowledged

investment statements I keep for a year.

of course, medical and tax info I keep indefinatly (or at least 7years)
