In a nutshell - a bunch of radicalised Islamic extremists from the UK thought they could further their cause by blowing up airplanes en-route from the UK to the US.
As of yet it's unclear as to just what their motives where but if they are of the same mindset as the other failed Islamic extremists (there have been 4 failed attempts in the UK in the last year), then it would be reasonable to assume that they are of the belief that this is the wish of Islam (death of the Infidel and one world under Islam). As any true Muslim will tell you, this is not the way of Islam which is a fundamentally peaceful religion.
The would-be terrorists have been under observation for nine months whilst the intelligence agencies gathered as much information as they could about the terror network.
Recent arrests in Pakistan gleaned new information which led the British authorities to suspect an imminent attack and hence the move to arrest the suspects.
For information, the suspects aren't Arabs they're British born Muslims most of whom are of Pakistani descent. Two of the 24 people arrested are of British descent and have recently converted to Islam. One person has been released without charge. Magistrates (court officials) have granted the police more time to interview 22 of the 23 suspects still in custody. No charges have been brought so far but this isn't unusual in respect of suspected terrorists (it's a long and slow process).
1 suspect is from Birmingham (central England), 5 are from High Wycombe on the outskirts of London and the other 18 are from London.
The plan involved concealing liquid explosives in drinks bottles - certain explosives are brown and look like cola, others are clear and look like water. In unmixed form the compounds are very stable, once mixed they become very unstable and the plan seems to have been to use camera flashes to detonate the devices after the compounds had been mixed on the planes.
From what we know at the moment it seems that the initial plan was to detonate explosives aboard three airliners somewhere over the Atlantic - this would have made the collection of forensic evidence almost impossible. At a later data a second wave of explosions was planned and following this a third, and probably final, wave. It is thought that the third wave of attacks could have been carried out when the planes were over US cities in order to cause further casualties on the ground.
In the light of the threat airlines around the world introduced immediate restrictions on hand luggage being carried onto a plane. The UK introduced the strictest measures (obviously) which meant passengers could take only the absolute essentials on board a plane. The US imposed a ban on all liquids and gels.
Just for clarity, a lot of people think you can't take things on board the planes. It's actually that you can't take them through customs check-in. Once checked in and you're 'airside' you can buy drinks, books etc at the airport shop where all merchandise has been carefully screened.
For the most in-depth coverage of the plot go to the BBC News website - http://news.bbc.co.uk/ where you'll be able to browse thousands of webpages, videos, reports, analysis, reactions etc etc.

News sources have indicated that the british police and secret services had been tracking a group for several months, and that the terrorists werein the final stages of the attack. The attack was to invovle smuggling liquid explosives, such as nitro, in water bottles or toehr liquid containers onto an aircraft. In this manner the explosivers were virtually undetectable. The goasl was to blow up ten or more planes en route over the atlantic ocean. The plot was foiled when neighbours of the suspects calle dpolice and warned of futher suspicious behavior. The 21 arreted were british and pof pakistani origin. The attakcs have been linked tAl Quead. Reasons for this are vbecause of similarities with past al queada attacks that have been foiled and the organisations cnstant obsession with air transit.

21 British Pakistanis(not Arabs) were arrested at London attempting to board planes. CNN/FOX/NBC/etc. says this was a dry run, just testing the system.

MAY BE NOT YET BUT THEY NOW HAVE THIS IDEA FROM WHAT HAPPENED IN LONDON RECENTLY. FURTHER, AS FOR THOSE SUSPECTS ARRESTED SO FAR, THERE IS NO REASON TO BELIEVE THAT THEY HAVE HAD NO CONNECTIONS WITH THE ARAB WORLD!
