Its a hernia around the base of the umbilical cord, usually if it is something serious it will be fixed after the infants first birth day with a fairly simple surgery.
You should always always always get all the information you need from your doctor. They owe you that, its not a favor from them. You're paying that doctor for his expert opinion, and you better be getting all of it. If you're not, then its time to get a new doctor. If you feel rushed at the doctors office, and feel like your concerns are not being heard then you need to switch.

Why don't you ask your doctor? Who told you that your daughter has an umbilical hernia - if it was someone outside the field of medicine - don't listen to them. Some people just like to think that they're 'in the know' on everything. Ignore them.
But if it was your doctor, or the pediatrician, he/she should have explained what it is.

This just means that when her umbilical area was healing (after her birth) a little hole was left inside that did not heal (or close up). Usually these close up on their own. Sometimes they are quite large and need surgical help. My daughter is 9....she had a small one. It is gone now. It never really gave her any pain and she lived through it. Good luck!

My mother had it. The abdominal wall where the umbilical cord used to be is weakened or ruptured in some way. It's no biggie. But don't take my word for it because I'm not a doctor.
'nuff said?

It's a tear in the membrane surrounding the stomach just behind the belly button. I've had one for years, it's been repaired twice and come undone again. Last time the doctor said if it's not bothering me, we wouldn't bother repairing it again since it's common for the repairs not to last. It's nothing to worry about. Your doctor should know if and when a repair is necessary.

You should've asked the doctor this question. Why wait until now, and why ask a bunch of unreliable strangers?
