Try using the recovery console on your original Windows XP installation disk. After the "Welcome" screen appears, it will ask you if you want to install or repair, choose repair. When you get to the dos screen type: chkdsk(space) /p. After it runs type: exit. More than likely you have a virus or a spyware/adware problem. The best solutions for these are: Ad-Aware from Lavasoft, AVG Anti-virus from Grisoft, and Spy-bot Search and Destroy which is from downloads.com. Another helpful program is "Belarc Advisor". It keeps track of what programs, equipment, and updates that you have on your computer, but more importantly it keeps track of all "key codes" for Windows XP and any other that require that to install them. Get it on the screen and then print out a copy, keep it in a safe place. These are all free programs. If you feel the need to format your master drive, run "Belarc Advisor" print it out, and then move your data to your second hard drive before you format the master drive.

Hi, sounds to me like you have a problem there maybe due as I understand it
to the installation of a second hard drive.I don't know what operating system you have. I had two hard drives some time ago and had no problems when I installed the second. First of all I suggest you start from scratch. I would proceed as follows: Partition your first hard drive C: and create the active partition that is where the operating system goes. If you are asked if you want to create any other logical drive on the same disk say no, unless you want to but this would probably not be wise at this point until you have everything under control. Then format it. Reinstall the OS. Check that everything works then attach the second hard drive. The pc should detect it and assign to it the letter D. THe cd rom drive will now be drive E and so on.Hope this works for you.

this is weird.....I have a few questions of my own...is D a floppy or zip drive of some sort?....when you said "diskette" that got me to thinking....and perhaps the original operating system install was done from drive D and now there are system file issues and it goes back to the original source looking to retrieve those and they are not to be found, if that makes any sense...(perhaps)....
if it came down to it, you could always get a working system and install one of these (2) drives as a "slave" on the working system and then you could at least recover files, data, etc from it....
