I want to know why punk/emo/metal fans can go out and buy a CD of an "underground" band and they're cool, but when the band makes a major music video and more people find out about the artist, the group is considered as a bunch of sellouts?(eg. Panic! At The Disco, Fall Out Boy, Avenged Sevenfold, etc.)

Its because those kids listen to these bands while they're still "underground" and its like you best kept secret that you don't want anyone to know about. And when the secret is out, they feel betrayed and kinda hurt that they aren't part of this elite small fanbase.

Plus most of those bands music does change sligthy to more general population likable tosell more and get more popularity before they can do an album of their chosing.

Frequently when a band is offered to sign on a major label, the label has a lot to say about how your music sounds. The label is in it to make money. They're not about the long-time fan base of 10,000 who've been listening to the underground music. They're interested about getting lots of air-play on the radio. Feeding the demographics of 'who buys CDs'. And in order to get that, they have to be able to mix well with the current styles. If the music is CLOSE to what 17 year old boys listen to (as a general rule) - they their music will be formulated to a more generic sound for 17 year old boys. The label owner might not like certain phrases, or certain sounds and may make the band perform to their own personal likings. It's that - or lose the contract - and the money.
Therefore - "selling out"

Sometimes bands get lucky and their sound, emotion, attitude all stays intact. But getting a major label sometimes rips a band apart.

Well...anytime a band has fans before they get signed to a major label, some of the the original fans always consider them sellouts, doesn't matter the genre, which is ridiculous because why do people start a band except to get rich and famous. The bands you mentioned specifically, though, are sellouts because they're the worst form of people taking advantage of a corporate rock trend and no metal band worth a **** would ever allow it's music to be played on TRL for christ's sake...jeez....do yourself a favor and listen to some real music, not that crap.

Because its not cool to like a band when they've made a bit of money! lol! Don't ask me why!
The people that say those things would only do the same if they had the chance, they're probably just jealous! Music should be liked for musics sake, not any other reason!
