Originally, the movement was to end women repression. Yet, I often find women still complaining that they are not equal! The younger generation don't appreciate the things done by the older generation. Have you seen the clothes of Today's young girls? What about Rap Music disrespect of Black women in their lyrics and videos. Men's magazines displayed women like a rack of meat. TV shows like Deal or No Deal, Vegas, Fastlanes(reruns?) which display women as sex objects. Madonna, Janet Jackson.. do I need to say more?

Note: Was the Women's Liberation Movement a failure? (I hate making such mistakes--rushing ahead and not watching as I write).

I don't feel woman's lib was a failure because women now have more choices than ever. I am a stay at home mom. I am not oppressed or repressed, I am lucky enough to make that choice. I stay at home and cook and clean because I want to not because society thinks I should. As far as women being sex objects in the media that to is a choice made by them (for the most part) and because of the liberation movement they make darn good money doing it. Madonna, Janet Jackson, ect. are very powerful and wealthy woman. And I am not sure if all of todays generation appreciate what our grandmothers did for us but I know I do.

I don't believe it was a complete failure. Women do get the jobs now that they couldn't get many yrs ago. We do get paid better and some of us make more than some men. But I do agree with you about the clothes the kids are wearing. They are to revealing as I tell my 16 yr old granddaughter all the time. I agree with you about the television shows. I won't watch them because they exploit women to much, but as one girl answered, that won't change because they want that pay check. Most of all, I hate those magazines that display woman they way do, Again, the woman wants to do it for the money. So you really can't blame the magazine. If the women want to do it. then they certainly will take advantage of that situation. In this case, it is up to women to put a stop to this filth. Enough said I guess!

Personally, I think there have been some failures, but by and large many of the issues resolved and still evolving are good. The bottom line whether women like it or not is that, "Men will always treat women the way they act."

So much of the equality issues can be overcome by acting like a lady.

(i.e., presenting oneself as trashy, slutty, easy, weak, or disrespectful will be met in kind every time.)

I believe you will see a few more changes over time that will help redefine what the women's movement will be over the next few years/generations. I believe it will continue to change as societal values change, the women's movement will adapt to address those new issues and needs.

It was certainly no failure. Women were not allowed into certain colleges and only clerical and medical jobs in the military. Women were never considered for partners or higher positions in larger corporations, etc. During the movement, however, women defeminized themselves in order to make a statement. By today's standards, a woman can look like a woman, exert her sexuality and still be president of a corporation. You seem to overlook the ads that show some beefy guy salivating over a beautiful girl? You don't need to say anymore. You just need to take a closer look. (On a personal note: I hate the slutty look young women are sending.)

The balance of women's lib and abusing it is lost I think. Women are human beings and should be treated as such, just as any group of people should be. The problem is with those that have taken it too far. Everything that is physically possible should not be done. Just because women are allowed the right to dress any way they want, doesn't mean that we should abuse it and go in the public overexposed. Some things should retain its modesty.

I don't think the women's lib movement was a failure. I think that things still aren't completely equal, but that most of the problems are with individuals. I can now wear pants to school. I won't be expected to quit my job when I have kids. I can pick any profession I want. They're little things, but they're things my grandma and great grandma didn't get and they're just some of the ways that women's lib have improved things.

The clothes some young girls wear make them look like they want to be treated like meat and that they have no respect for themselves. I don't know why they do that. I don't get why a lot of women dress/act like all they are is thier body. But, it's their body and they can choose what to do with it. That's something else women's lib did- it gave women choices.

I would not say the women's movement was a complete failure. It is just there are always going to be those who take their rights and opportunities and miss use them. As for the way women are shown on TV, to change that "sex object" image Hollywood would would have to change and none of these people want to lose a paycheck.

Yes it was a failure because not all woment wanted it to be the way some women were voicing opinions. They got what they wanted but it still wasnt and isnt good enough and it caused a strong upheaval in many lives. I'm not saying it didnt do some good, who wants oppresion and women shouldnt be thought of any less but a woment can't demand to be at the top, get the same salary and be as important then call out the next day because a child is sick. It would be nice to be able to but in the real world it doesnt work that way.
also there are a lot of women today that I know and speak to personally who would love to be able to just stay at home with the children and be a housewife....so women fought hard to get rid of that "image" years ago and women today want it back.

I think you are mixing issues here. I was there when this movement started and did not agree with the radical part of it but so agree that women have a higher respect. Yes, what goes on today with all the things you mentioned from clothes to role models are just awful and that has something to do with morality....or lack of. Because of all of that, I have personally become more conservative and like the old-fashioned family values and believe that people should be respected and should act respectful but ones personal behavior factors in. If a person does not respect themselves the how can they hope to have the respect of others?......all I can do is control my own behavior!

Was it ever!! The only thing women's liberation has accomplished is to set women back hundreds of years. Women have become sluts in looks. Men no longer respect the women that are walking around looking like 25cent prostitutes. When you see a young girl at the store who forgot to dress before she left the house sometimes I wonder WHERE is her mother? Then I see her mother, she's the fatter slut standing nearby. I really wish women would wake up and see what they are doing to themselves.
