Great question.

But of the 3 you named, can I remove the first bunch, treat the second pair as separate as well as a team (Lennon wins, in the long run) and well, yeah, fully agree with the third.

Here are some more who've penned da good stuff (not always for themselves, of course):

Goffin/King
Joni Mitchell
Jagger/Richards
Elvis Costello (BEFORE he became a lounge lizard)
Leiber/Stoller
Dozier/Holland
Burt Bacharach
Ray Davies
Chuck Berry (and that's leaving aside his pure influence as a guitarist who's affected thousands of axemen)
Lou Reed (85% of the good stuff was with the VU)
Kurt Cobain (dying early leaves a tight legacy : )
Difford/Tilbrook - (not really the new Lennon & McCartney, but decent enough)

OBSCURE(R) BUT STILL NOTEWORTHY:

Nick Drake
Leonard Cohen
Adrian Belew
Jeff Buckley
Gordon Lightfoot
Brian Eno (the early 'sung albums' are inventive - words & music)
George Clinton (yeah! great riffs be songwritin' too, dawg)
Bill Clinto - naaaaah, just kidding.

MOST DILUTED GENIUSES:

Robert Zimmerman aka 'BoBBeeeeee'
Neil Young
Frank Zappa
David Bowie
Prince

(The main problem is that these guys released so much that their 'shot percentage' or 'strike rate' went down a lot. Not to say that they aren't great, or worthy of recognition for their best moments.)

I'll go for the Gibbs, they write a hell of a lot of good stuff (not just the Bee Gees). Then again there's the guys from ABBA, they do really good stuff too, along with Tim Rice.

i don't know a lot with the aid of Leonard Cohen/ i admire Van Morrison a lot, yet have not bothered to purchase any albums on CD... I propose, i've got had countless on vinyl and cassette... not sure what that asserts approximately how huge of a fan i'm, tho, by using fact i actually do like him. And Dylan... Mr. Bob Dylan *rules*. BQ: with the aid of conversing approximately trolls, you're giving them what they want. forget approximately approximately them and that they wither and die.
