i frequently mistake someone for american when they sing, but then hear them in an interview and they are plainly brittish, or irish, or the like.i have been thoroughly confused, but i have a guess. could this be because so much of an accent or brogue depends on inflection, in addition to pronunciation? inflection is used in the music, and may therefore be confused. could this be right? anyone else have a guess or know? much appreciated.

Because it's not real speech: it's singing. You fluctuate your voice any way you want. Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones is a prime example. You'd never think he's British by listening to "Honky Tonk Women."

Your right, people can change their accent when singing as it is imitation of what they want to hear. Take Japanese singers, they sometimes cannot speak a word of English, don't know what the words mean, but they sound good after some practice at it.

well if the singer is singin with feelings and its form his heart he might not think so much of his accent or ..it might change or be ignored because its art and art is free
also if a singer wanted to put himself into certain style or trying to be like an idle 4 him he will care alot 4 his accent and the way in singin!
for me the feeling and not going out of music line is the best singing

i understand totally and i have no idea..maybe its because we all talk the same but because of where we live that is what our mind picks up..when i was little i had to take voice and diction to drop my southern accent..and i do not feel it is as strong but some people can still hear it..
