Hotel Dasaprakash on Poonamalee High Road was a good value -- Rs. 560 ($12) a night in an old but well-kept property in India's most venerated hotel chain. It has two restaurants on site, is within a 15-minute walk of a cluster of good restaurants near the Egmore Station, and a 5-10-minute walk of a branch of Sri Krishna Sweets.
We also stayed at New Woodlands Hotel, which is a nice compound and centrally located in Mylapore, but you don't really want to walk anywhere from there.
Someone else suggested GRT Grand Days, which is in the best neighborhood but very expensive.
