G'day,
Most of the answers that you have before mine have suggested for you to check Programs-Startup and MSConfig. However there are other considerations and suggestions as follows:
1. Uninstall programs/softwares that you do not need anymore (games, download utilities, etc). Go to Control Panel and choose Add/Remove Programs, and start uninstalling as much as you want.
2. MS Config clean-up is a good thing, but you have to be careful not taking out the the important stuff (eg. antivirus). Tread very carefully and when if doubt, just leave it.
3. Do not install more than one antivirus. It will slow down your computer speed immensely.
4. You have to consider as well that your computer is infected with spywares or virus. If this is the case, the best and fastest way would probably be reformatting the hard drive. Just make sure you have backed-up your data and you have your OS and other software CD with you to reinstall the everything back.
5. Some softwares (eg. Norton Systemworks or Winzip) have options not to load when windows start. Just tick/untick the appropriate option.
Hope this helps and good luck!!

first, you have to be the administrator to be able to do this.
1. go to>start>run
2. type msconfig, then the System Configuration Utility dialog box will open up.
3. go to the Services tab, then uncheck ONLY the programs that you don't use regularly. the critical programs are usually in the windows folder.
sometimes the programs have options that you can choose if you want them not to run at start up. clean up you disk, too. try also to defrag your pc, it may be another cause of slowdown. but make sure you have the time, since defragmentation may take a while, depending on how much disk space you've used.

From the start button, click on run, type msconfig in the box. click ok, go to the startup tab, and you will see the programs in there, that start when your computer starts. Uncheck the ones that you are not using, do not uncheck any anti-virus, spyware or firewall..If you are not sure what they are used for, put the name of the program, into the google search engine, and it will tell you, if it is needed. When you are finished, you will have to restart your computer..good luck..
