I have a Sony Vaio PCV-RX540 which I am hoping to use for some voice recording. But my fans make horrible noises, so I would like to replace them with quieter ones. Unfortunately, I am unsure which fans will fit in, and work with my system.

I have an intel mother board, and I know certain fans are compatible with these and others with AMD motherboards. But specifically, when I look at specs for fans, I don't know which ones (which specs) are important as far as size and compatibility are concerned.

I also don't know the specs of my own fans, or how to determine these (actually, I did figure out which case fan I had and read those specs, but they were little help because I was unsure which ones pertained to size and compatibility).

The owner's manual directs me to a support website for upgrading and repairing my particular PC, which I would be grateful to use, but I have yet to find any evidence that this site actually exists.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Take one out that's in your case, measure it, and then go buy that sized fan. They go by the mm in most cases. No pun intended :)

Most local computer repair shops can help you, really.

I clean and lube my own fans, as most fans get noisey after the first year of use. Some fans need to be replaced then.

What is the dust load on your system? My systems are all on top of the desk for the same fresh air that I breathe! Near the floor, they suck in too much hair, dust, crud...

I run Linux, so I have all the controls on the desktop, for fans, temperatures, speeds... All case fans that are the same size as the ones you have now will be compatible, and just look for CPU fans that support the type of processor you have, it should say.

Try the site below for those noisy fans. The CPU type (Intel or AMD) determines what type fan that you need. One of the better CPU fans is Zalman. They have fans that will fit Intel or AMD processors. Also use "Arctic Silver" CPU thermal grease when you put your new fan onto the processor.
