yes, usually let the tranny warm up by driving a few blocks then shifting from drive, to reverse to park then to neutral. apply the parking brake while in neutral and the engine running. check the fluid when parked on level surface.

Wow, alot of yes & no answers..........
Most vehicles need to be checked while running because an automatic transmission is a hydraulic unit. When the vehicle is shut off, fluid can drain back into the sump and make the level seem overfull. This applies to most vehicles on the road but there are a few exceptions. The best way to know, is to check your owners manual. It should give you a detailed explanation on how to properly check your level. Sometimes the dipstick will also provide some of this information. Good Luck

In the vast majority of cars the answer is yes, with the trans. in neutral or park and at normal operating temp. This is because trans. fluid expands at higher temps, so in order to get a proper reading the engine needs to be running and warm, if you were to check the fluid while cold a low reading would result. Possibly causing you to overfill the trans

yes. You have to drive the car around the block a few times to get the tranny to warm up. You get a more accurate reading that way and yes leave it running. Unless you have a Dodge caravan then just check it when its turned off.

Depends on the design so check the manual. At a guess, it must be checked when the engine is stopped.

Running and in the PARK position. The fluid color should be a light red. Change the fluid right away if it's brownish in color.
