ferry terrorism?

The increasing threat of terrorism on planes has really put me off flying and as a result i have decided to drive down to the south of France and go on a ferry. However, the thought just occured to me that the security on ferry crossings leaves a lot to be desired. Think about it. Im not going to go into too much detail incase it gives people ideas. But does anyone else think that ferry ports should use the same 'x-ray' machines that airports use? and would it be possible for those machines to scan cars and their contents?

Why not, and while you're at it, lets have security checks in all train stations, schools, offices, homes, and i know, why don't we pay for it, because after all we are the ones that have sat here complicit in the killing that has lead to these new threats, which i don't even believe exist, at least in the way we're told they do. Doesn't anyone find it strange that all of a sudden we're being told about terrorist plots, that have been foiled, does anyone remember 9/11, its clear that state sponsored terrorism is what we should be fearing, not flying and sailing. At least at sea you can swim to saftey, drop out of the sky and you're done for. My point is though, that flying is still safer than driving, even with the risk of some disenfrachised Arab, trying to make a point about the genocide of his borthers in the Muslim world. And what you wish for is likely to come true, and bite you in the ***, as we move towards a Police state, big bruvva style, you wait and see

boats are way safer than planes, even though people go on and on about fact that airline travel is the safest in the world. Te only reason they say this is because in terms of statistics it has the lowest percentage of fatalities per thousand flyers. However if someone gooes wrong and a plane crashes, more often than not MOST people (0ver 50%) die. In other words the potential for massive catastrophe is always large with air travel and with more air traffic and terrorism the potential increases daily. The potential for fatality in boats is lower because with life boats and the fact you aren't 30,000 feet above the ground theres less potential for major disaster.

I say take the boat.

Whilst understanding your fears,you must not let these people/events intimidate you! Instilling fear into you, to alter your way of life, is exactly what they want. Go on the ferry,my friend left this morning,also heading for the South of France,I received a message,she has arrived safely! Take the ferry,relax,and above all enjoy your time in France. As for ideas; you already gave the idea to ppl just by posting your Q here! Too late. But don't be too hard on yourself, I'm sure the terrorists have thought of it any way.

The x-ray machines can't "look" into cars. The rays are blocked by the car. Dogs or "sniffing" machines might be a solution to detect explosives but these are also limited by the programing they get.

As to the stats; these are always a help ... until you become part of the stat. No relief here.

Seems to me so long as you're not coming to America you're ok. Be safe, be aware, and be carefull. Go enjoy your trip.

I can understand your point. However, I don't think a cross channel ferry can be used as a weapon of mass destruction like an aircraft can! The terrorists don't just want to kill the people on board, they want to cause as much mayhem as possible. The Dover to Calais just isn't gonna have the same impact!

Dont let them win! I fully appreciate your concerns, I feel the same but to worry about such things and alter your lifestyle because of fears is giving in ....... they dont deserve to, so dont let them! OK we must all be extra vigilant but as you say you could drive down and get a ferry, whats to say that some fanatic wont explode a car in your vicinity, it happens all the time in Iraq and other places, they dont care who is in the way, and they wouldn't care if their own relatives or friends were on a plane or ferry that they targetted. I think its only a mtter of time before all forms of transport will be subject to threat but we have to maintain our standards and not lower them to their level..... they can never win, they know that but it wont stop them trying. Put such thoughts to the back of your mind & get off on holiday & have a fantastic, relaxing time ......see you when you get back!

Yes you are right. They can only detect explosives in a confined space (like an aircraft baggage hold - which is why everything has to go in the hold now).

But they are working on the technology to sniff explosives from 100 yards

Sorry, its night time in India. The time is 10.45 p.m. I just had a cupple of drinks & have reached home. Throughout the day, I have been thinking of these ******* terrorists. Tomorrow i.e. 15th of August, is our Independence day. I read in the news papers that these ******* bastards r planning something to to disrupt our celebrations. This is the height. If I come across any such terrorist I will kill him.

I understand that you are concerned about travelling but you can't let paranoia/unrest take over your life - if you do honey, then the terrorists (wherever and whoever) have won.

Concentrate on avoiding cancer, a heart attack or being hit by a car - all much more likely than being killed by a terrorist bomb.
