Teaching is an art. There are way too many variables that one cannot control in teaching for it to be a matter of science.

It's a little of both. There are a lot teaching methods that have a thorough basis in scientific fact, involving everything from psychology to mathematics to acoustics. However, teaching involves some very subtle people skills: and that's more of an art.

Science is about making hypotheses about how stuff are, and then strengthening or disproving them through experiments.

Art is about expressing feelings and stuff through verbal and/or non-verbal media, such as sculpting, music, dance, poetry, film, etc...

Teaching is about teaching people stuff. Since it's something you do, and not something you research, it certainly has nothing to do with science. On the other hand, there may be a science of of teaching. That wouldn't be teaching though, it would be teaching-science, also known as pedagogy.

The actual act of teaching, is more like art than science, since you express yourself in front of an audience, and try to transfer your thoughts to them. But there is a difference, since teaching is supposed to transfer objectively useful thoughts, whereas art focuses on the subjectively useful thoughts.

Arts. There are no scientific ways to make people learn or wanting them to learn. Teaching someone is an art, everyone does it differently and sees it differently, and it takes a special person to teach. It takes more than books to teach, most importantly it takes passion.

Its a matter of art. For you to be able to teach something you have to be able to present the material in a form that the students, will be able to grasp it. If you just read it froma piece of paper it wont do much good. It takes hard work and much creativity to teach.

Intuition. I think teachers are born. Folks can be taught skills as necessary, but the really good teachers are born to it - they'll teach people whether they mean to or not.
