The first Earth satellite was of course the Moon, and the first artificial satellite was Sputnik launched by the Russians in October of 1957. A great movie to watch about this "The Right Stuff"; rent it on Netflix or anywhere else you can find it. It is a great movie.

if you mean the first man made object in space then it's actually not sputnik..i can't remember what object it was, it might of been a tub or something...look it up if you want more....if you're looking for the first actual scientific satellite then yes on record it was sputnik in 1957.

as the first satellite it's SPUTNIK 1 by the soviet union RUSSIA in 1957 the month was most probably August [not sure].
