Until recently, the electric meter was read monthly by this old man who pulled into the driveway, walked to the meter, wrote on the paper then left.... last month I got a bill for well over $220 and when I called to ask why my bill doubled its norm, I was told that the meter reader "guessed" at the kilowatts for the previous month and this past month he actually read it. After pitching a "polite" fit on the incompetency of someone who is paid to actually read a meter, they assured me it would not go unread again. I also said if it happens again, I would be running my home on a generator and not using their power again (not that I would actually do that).
I am in TN..... in an area where NOTHING is done like it would make sense. I can't even get a phone calling package to make long distance calls cheaper than 10 cents a minute! No Bell South, no AT&T, no Vonage... nothing that's got better rates.
Happy to be going home (NC) in 21 months!!

No, they have been phased out over the last 10 years here in the Philadelphia area. All meters (gas, eletric, water) have been converted to a automated system. The new meters send out a radio signal. Then all you need is a van with a reciever to drive by and read the meters.

They are supposed to come and read my meter each month but they rarely so. Instead I get a bill with an estimate. Then when they finally decide to come out and actually read the meter I end up with an enormous bill stating that my previous bills were underestimated. I live in PA.

There is someone who comes and checks the meter every other month. The months in between are estimated. If you live in an apartment there is usually a back room that they were built into. I've lived in WV and SC

Hey Mr. Colt..
Indian meter readers are differnet than here. Up here in US, some of them have automatic meter reader which is connected to COmpany directly itself. And some wants the company ppl to check their meters everyday.
Thats a good question though. I never thought of it while i was in india and here. Good luck!!
