I wouldn't recommend anything too small like a Scion Xa, Mini or Beetle (and the likes). Reliable fun cars to consider are the Acura RSX (RSX-S), the Civic, Toyota Corolla S, or Scion Xc. That is if you're looking for new. If you're considering used, I think a Volvo is always a safe bet.

When you have a chance drive with her until she's really confident:ithe problem is not what she wants but what can you afford. Do you really need a car for her? can she pay for it?
Driving is responsability and privilege not a right> My daughter drives the older car only when it's free because we need to go to work and I won't buy a third car just for her until she can mantain it>

a car that is low maintenance, safe on the road, small and low power and unable to pick up speed straightaway would be good.

Get her something big and ugly -- this way she won't feel compelled to drive fast and "sporty" in it. No SUV since they're prone to roll-over. Ford Taurus is high in my book as something bland and big......and inexpensive.

something old that won't run very fast. So if she wrecks it, it won't be like wasting a lot of money. And the insurace rates will be cheaper.
