Entirely depends on two factors - speed of PC and size of data it's scanning.
Personally I don't like Norton, you might want to have a look at www.avast.com - it's free, updates it's virus database frequently and is fast.
Also, consider a defrag - maybe the hardrive's running a bit slow because of that. Diskkeeper is fantastic, and you can get it for a free trial (diskkeeper.com) - if you do try that be warned the first scan may take in excess of 6 hours (but will run happily in the background whilst you do other stuff).

Admittedly Norton is about the slowest for doing a full scan, but it is rather thorough, hence the option for a 'quickscan'
As a rough guess, I'd say you have something in the order of a 1 to 2Ghz system with 256Mb of memory.
The time is relative to the number and type of files on your computer, and the speed of your processor. Degragging help and emptying the web browser caches can make a big difference too*.
(With XP): From Internernet Explorer: Tools > Internet Options > Delete Files (from 'Temporary Internet Files')
Try cleaning out any spyware too, that can help. Give Lavasoft's AdAware a try, if you don't already use it:

Clean-up your pc before doing a virus scan.
Delete cache, cookies, history, etc. Do a defrag of your hard drive.
This should spped up the scan. Also, schedule the scan for 3 AM so it doesn't interfere with your work.
You can try Trend Micro or Panda online scans, too.

That does seem a long time!!! I have McAfee Anti-Virus Scan, and it takes about an hour, get rid of any unwanted programmes, or do a De-frag' before scanning that speeds things up.

Before you do a scan you can clear your history, cache, recycle bin and temp files to make fewer files to scan.
Depending on what you have in the files, this could speed up your scan.
Also, before your scan, reboot! This will give all available memory to the scan.

you must have a butt load of stuff on your comp !!! i have norton 2006 and it takes about 10 minutes to do a full scan. find and run some different utilities before you scan.(IE adaware se..ccleaner...registry repair) most are freeware and they seem to delete most of the garbage that doesnt need to be there before a scan.

I use NTL netguard and it scans non stop so you don't notice it running. If Norton is taking so long you may have a lot of spyware or adaware on you PC, or your may need to defragment it.
