Our sun is about 4.5 Billion (4,500,000,000) years old and is half way through is life cycle. The sun works by converting Hydrogen into Helium thus creating Light and Heat. At the end of its life cycle it will run out of hydrogen to convert to helium and it will have only helium.

As the nuclear fuels in it become depleted, the core contracts and the outer layers expand more then the orbit of mars (Red Giant). The outer layers of the sun will start to drift off into space (Planetary Nebula). The Sun looses most of its mass to the Nebula.

The star cools and shrinks and it will eventually be a few thousand miles in diameter (White Dwarf). No nuclear reactions will take place inside it and the faint star radiates its heat into space.

The Sun will eventually loose all of its heat and becomes cold and dark (Black Dwarf)

Theory has it that the dusty remains of this process will one day form a new solar system, with a possibility of new life...

Hope this has helped =)

The Sun burns about 700 billion tonnes of per second so according to scientific calculations it should last about another 5 billion years from now.

After the hydrogen has been used up in the Sun's core the sun will expand to cover up about almost all the stars in our solar system. This stage is known as the Red Giant, and will be the end of life on Earth as we know it (if we have not managed to colonize other habitable plants before hand, or if we have not manage to destroy earth yet).

Best estimates are that the sun will exhaust its supply of hydrogen and start burning helium in about 5 billion years. At that point the sun will flare into a red giant and swallow up the inner planets (earth among them).

I wouldn't worry about real estate values plummeting on this news. At least not for a while. Cheers.

The earth will eventually be destroyed, but nothing dramatic will happen for at least 5,000 million years.
The sun releases energy ( hydrogen fuel ) at about 4 million tons per second, which is to slight to notice except over an immense period of time.
FYI - The total mass of the sun is 2 followed by 27 zeros. That is equivalent to 333,000 bodies the mass of earth, i.o.w the earth can fit into the sun 333,000 times !
Wow...! it is true.

Our Sun estimated lifetime is 6 billion years from now on but life as we know it ends earlier.Don"t worry we have a lot of time!

Based on scientist estimate, we are far from even half way there. Dun worry, all living things on earth will prob be exterminated 1st before that happens.
