I have to chose between those 2 options- which is more appropiate?

A baloon is not a living thing if that is what you are getting at (or your teacher). A baloon can expand or contract but it isn't actually growing because no extra material is being incorporated into its structure. It can't adapt because adaptation is something living things do.

Or go for the third option. A balloon, not being a living organism, just floats around until it becomes yet more rubbish polluting the planet, and possibly choking a turtle if it lands on the sea.

Actually, both answers are correct. As the atmospheric pressure lessens the balloon expands; thereby growing and adapting to it's surroundings.

neither.... unless atmospheric pressure or temperature would cause the air pressure inside the balloon to shrink or grow.

as far as the adapting... its a balloon. It can't think... nor is it alive... it can be acted upon by OUTSIDE forces (IE the air pressure... heat and so on). It can't really adapt.

If you had to choose, I would say it has the ability to adapt to its surroundings by bursting and eventually decomposing into the ground.
