in the uk when claiming for living expences the cohabiter can any claim for for half the expences, especially if the otherperson is working. in my case my husband could only claim for half the rent on the house he was living in whereas i claimed for my entire mortage. The best advice is don't live with anyone until money is sorted out it makes things less complicated.

In the state of West Virginia:

The Courts do not recognize common law. BUT...I was married 15 years and lived with him 3 years prior to marriage and when we got our divorce because we had been married 10+ years the judge awarded me 50% of all of the marital property.

I do know states are different but I'm thinking any thing over 10 years is grounds for 50%
