Hybrids have two engines. One is a gasoline engine.
The other is essentially an electric motor, that runs on batteries
charged by the gas engine. The system in very basic terms
is like a gas generator, the kind you have for your house when
the lights go out. The gas engine keeps the electric supply going.
In most hybrids the electric motor powers the car from a stop
to a cruising speed. The gas engine takes over at highway speeds. Hybrids are very complex, and contain many pounds of batteries. Creating the debate how much is one saving?
Their is a cost premium to buy one over a gas model,
and the batteries will need to be replaced, causing a disposal issue.

I assume that you're asking about a gasoline/electric hybrid.

The current models on the market (US)
Toyota Prius
Toyota Highlander Hybrid
Toyta Camry Hybrid
Lexus GS450H
Lexus RX400H
Honda Insight
Honda Civic Hybrid
Honda Accord Hybrid
Ford Escape Hybrid
Mercury Mariner Hybrid
Saturn Vue Green Line
Toyota Estima hybrid (Japan)
Toyota Alphard hybrid (Japan)

Unfortunately, they are all tied to the gasoline station pump, just like traditional autos. You put in gasoline, and the gasoline engine will often power the vehicle, and excess energy from the gasoline engine (or captured energy from the braking process) is used to charge the hybrid battery. The hybrid battery/electric motors are used to supplement the gasoline engine for starting and acceleration, and sometimes may even solely power the vehicle for short distances.

There are groups looking at converting the currently available hybrids into PHEVs/GHEVs (Partial/Grid-chargeable Hybrid Electric Vehicles). Depending on your source of electricity, the electricity may be cleaner than burning gasoline, and usually cheaper, more convienent (you can "refill" at home or work, rather than going out of your way to a filling station), and electricity is usually created from a more local source than gasoline is... With a larger hybrid battery pack and the ability to plug in, one could go many miles on EV only, and as needed the gasoline engine could come back on to recharge if you had to go a further distance. Such a modification on a Toyota Prius has shown 100-250MPG.

In a hybrid the car is powered by electric. The gas engine runs a generator to provide the eletric to run the car and keep the batteries charged.
