I don't know what arrangements you have in Zacatecas but unless your going to be staying with a family I would plan on at least 2500.00 for housing and food, spending etc......It certainly can be done for less but at what price in terms of cutting out that "Upper" part of your visit The sunsets are the most beautiful in the world, I will be going back in February of 2007

To immigrate to Mexico, you have to prove an income of $1000 per month for a single person and $1500 per month for a couple. You can live pretty well in $1500 a month in Zacatecas... and even have time to hunt for silver.

Do you mean upper middle class by American standards or by Mexican. You'll pay a lot to do it the American way. You going to be renting or buying? If you can live in a simple but nice Mexican style house I'd estimate $1500-2000us. It can be done for much less.
Retirement income requirements for immigrating gringos is around $1200
