Because Uncle Sam say "do as I say do, not as I do" When you have no one on Earth who can singly hold you accountable or collectively too uninterested to try. Who is there to make you stay straight? The ONLY reason why Germany after WWII was siad to be wrong is because they were defeated and held accountable. If they had not tried to do their exterminations during the war, but quietly over time outside of war. Would the US, the UK, or France would have attacked behind that? I think not. And what was the differance of gassing millions of Jews in a couple of years than wiping out a whole continant of indigenous people over decades, often lying to them and pitting one against the other to achieve your own aim(their land)? That was wrong, but since there was no one to hold those evil people doing it accountable. History never called it that way. Wipeing out a whole city, hospitals, schools, musiums, the old people AND the children(no matter how small)with out warning by a WMD. Was not called wrong, because there was no one to hold those evil people accountable. It is like when you were kids. If you were at school, you knew the bullies were somewhat controlled by the teachers. Or at least be punished if they did something before it was prevented. Out at the park where supervision was scarce. the bully could intimidate other kids more, but their was still the park officials and the police if need be. What if their were no police, and not park officials? Then it is mob rule or the biggest and baddest rules the playgroung. That is what the World is like now. The biggest and baddest is stomping around on anyone that doesn't give up their toys or play by his rules. And there is no police and the groundskeeper is drunk in the shack. The US is not the biggest abuser but certainly a very hypocritical one. trying to use the very Constitution that promotes rights to deny people of it.

I believe you.
That is, referring to your name. Amazing how such people identify themselves so well, then wonder why people don't take their questions seriously.
The U.S. isn't. Are there some? Sure. Always have been. One difference. We actively search the abuses out and end them. How about your country? Do you?
We have free speech, so we put such findings into public view, making it look like a our country is full of abuse when in truth it is simply that we don't tolerate darkness and lies, hiding and evasion, as ways to deal with human rights abuse.
How about your country? Do you put your dirty laundry out for everyone to see and discuss? Do you have the courage?
What nonsense others make up about the U.S. At the same time, I support their freedom to state it. Keep speaking up. I have faith my fellow Americans, a majority at least, will understand and educate themselves sufficiently to vote wisely as a whole. They did with President Clinton (his personal problems aside), and they did with President Bush (his language problems and being stuck with the VERY old issue of Islamic fundamentalism aside).
The system works.

Despite the lackluster responses, undoubtedly it comes from 1) a sense of entitlement, and 2) the belief that being the sole remaining super-power gives the US the right to do as it pleases.
The US however, is no more an abuser than most other countries (speaking strictly on its own citizens). It's the paradox of our stated values and the way in which we go about exercising and promoting these values that lead to accusations of being hypocrites...whether right or wrong.
Despite what some want you to believe, it is neither a liberal nor a conservative issue. It is a sociological issue.

Well you are under the assumption that people that kill and do not value rights are human.
Why is it that countries who have such poor records on human rights hold us to high standards ?
Fix your own problems before you complain, when you set a shining example, then you can judge.

Those Americans are so insulting the way that they airlift (at there own cost) massive Ton's of Emergency aid to anywhere around the world to ANYONE that needs it, In a heart beat ! The way American husband's, son's, brothers, and fathers, are buried over in Europe fighting for "Europe's survival", go over and count the graves of people who never made it home for Christamas (they go on as far as the eye can see), Yea those American's, HELPING THE WORLD AGAIN ! Some nerve ! But the world's hand is always out to the people of the UNITED STATES, Kinda Funny, huh ?

Why are you preaching such nonsense? We have more rights than any country on earth. The NY Times and Washington post can even tell all our secrets.

It's a good question that you can learn from. Consider one thing, that many of the so-called "war criminals" and all prisoners receive far better treatments in the American jails than they would in their own countries. Human rights abuses? Let's see... what do you call what many kidnappers outside of America do to servicemen and volunteers that go to help out a country? What are those rebel forces and some government forces doing in Africa? How about what the Afghans are doing to their own people, or the Iraqi doing to their own people, or Africans doing to their own people? If Americans did that... the whole world would be screaming, "Bloody murder!" but why not now when such atrocities (mass graves with children, women, tied prisoners were killed in masses) are still being committed? How about those countries where women are not allowed to have equal treatment in employment or under the law or allowed to attend school or allowed to cross the street without a male companion, as though the women were prisoners in need of 24x7 supervision? Woman are "human" too and deserve rights, don't you think? Or, what about those that are tortured and physically abused and denied medical attention or legal assistance for months (years?) when they're accused of petty crimes or contrived "crimes" in other countries?
Yes, there have been a few yokels that have committed a few crimes... soldiers under untold stress, not able to discriminate between friend or foe in a land where you may have the same ethnic people killing one another and killing Americans, a land where Americans do not know the language but are sent there by the government...? I am not excusing their action but trying to put in its rightful context, since YOU seem not to know what it's like to wear a uniform and be in constant fear of being in someone's gun-sights, not knowing if you'll get back safely to your sleeping quarters, and eventually back home to one's family and loved ones.
Yes, Americans are "bad," except in times of emergencies, floods, tsunamis, famine, earthquakes, etc., when those "hated" Americans send troops, medical personnel, medicine and volunteers to help the feed sick, injured and homeless... and they give out free food and free medicine... or why do so many people from all over the world want to come to American shores... why? Because their country is so good that they want to leave? Or because here we have more freedoms and liberties and rights... the right to get an education, the freedom to work in one's own chosen field, the liberty to eat or live or speak and read whatever one desires... to educate their children, to receive adequate medical attention and fair treatment under the law?
America is not a perfect country, our jails are a testament to that, but this country has laws that protect even non-citizens that commit a crime and are afforded and guaranteed fair treatment under the law, no secret trials like in other countries, the police cannot just walk into your home without a probably cause, you are not ordered what to think or how to speak... you can get medical attention.... an education.... there are opportunities here for those that WANT to get ahead in life, unlike many other countries that preach a belief in a God but kill their own who do not believe as they do... we have religious freedom here! We have written laws that protect us... and would protect YOU, too.
Human rights abuses can occur anywhere, even in the US, but at the very least the victims have legal recourses not available in others in other countries! We have human rights violations here because those committing the human rights violations have yet to be caught and prosecuted...! Americans do not stand for human rights violations, and are NOT known for committing human rights violations; we have standing laws for incidents such as that. That it exists, yes, but not on the same scale as in other countries around the world.
Evil exists everywhere, in case you're not aware of it. Wherever you're from, I bet there has been human rights violations at a larger scale than in the US! Wherever you're from, your newspapers aren't allowed under some law (or fear of government retaliation) to print human right violations!
Even Nazis excused their actions, just as other dictators have throughout history have... but we expose human rights violations and prosecute the violators and we DO imprison those found guilty... we don't throw a party for them; we abhor their actions because they bring shame to this nation and what this nation stand for.
Tell me, where have there been no human rights ever committed? The North Pole? The South Pole? Unless you're asking this asinine question for points, please engage your thought process first!
