the tourism is really broken into two options. trekking the most magnificant and unforgettable scenery you could ever imagine. and shopping and seeing the cultural sights in Kathmandu.
trekking aint for the faint of physique. Even on day hikes, if you aren't in decent shape, you're going to have some problems.
But by all means. if you think you can do it do it. It's a commitment. some of the traks are weeks up to a month. there are shorter traks around the valley that are great too. But if you really are adventurous... make friends with one of the buddhist shop owners in the thangka painting s shops in Bhaktapur. See if you can get invited to visit their village for a few days or so. would you like a name and address?
Shopping and sight-seeing the kathmandu valley is terrificly rewarding. wandering the streets, stooping into some shop for some goat lung. getting invited to some nepali tea (delicious) by everyone. there is a temple or stupa around every corner. for real. and that singing? probably it's not a pop song... more likely it's a conversation with God. and yes that's a cow in the street and yes That, my friend, is a Golden Eagle sitting on that telephone pole.
