As has already been said, there are no 'gold' bands because of the expense (and possible confusion with a simple wedding ring!). Again, as has been described, a silver band is called after the use of silver (usually plated brass) instruments, and the brass band after the use of that metal. Most people, however, confuse both of these names with a Military Band, so please give me a moment to explain: Silver and Brass bands consist only of what are know as "Brass" instruments - cornets, trumpets, trombones, euphoniums, tenor horns, tubas, brass basses and sometimes things like french horns - the point being that these are all METAL instruments which are played through a "cupped" metal mouthpiece. Military bands can have any or all of these instruments, plus "Woodwind" instruments (some of which are not necessarily made of wood! - the whole range of saxophones for instance). These are things like piccolos, flutes, oboes, clarinets, saxes, bassoons, and most of these (the exceptions being the picc and flute) are played by blowing air across a 'reed' (sometimes two) in a mouthpiece. (Of course, in most cases, drums - the 'percussion' section - are usually, but not always, involved). This is just to give you an idea, and purists please don't bother to tell me all the others that I've left out; I know, I've been a musician all my life.

Strictly, brass bands play brass instruments. Silver bands play silver instruments.

In practice, you have brass instruments in silver bands, and vice versa, because you don't usually turn away a really good player just because of the colour of his instrument!

There are no "gold" bands because as a general rule, people don't make instruments out of gold. Take a look at the price of a good silver Euphonium. Now imagine how much it would cost if some mad person were to make one out of gold.

A Brass band plays instruments which are brass coloured, a silver band plays instruments that are silver coloured. There are no gold coloured instruments, of if there are they are classed as brass coloured. Think the instruments were originally made of either brass or silver. but are now usually of other metals just different colours.
