A lot depends on the species. A Yahoo search for "orchid care" (include the quotation marks in the search box) yields 147,000 results. If you do the same search, and are willing to spend a little time exploring, I'm sure that you will quickly find the information you seek.

Good luck with your search.

Phals usually bloom once a year, lasting 3 months is usual, some of them will bloom for 6+ months.

If the leaves are firm (almost succulent) and a healthy green, and the roots look good, the plant is just fine, it's just resting up for its next bloom cycle. Don't pull the stem, you can cut it near the base once it's completely brown and dead. When it's ready to bloom again, you'll see a new stem starting under the 5th leaf from the top.

Trim the rotted roots and repot yet do not use soil. There are orchid potting combos accessible. Orchids do not particularly favor to be potted if growing outdoors all twelve months in a warmth climate.

we visited an Orchid farm in Jamaica, they said you must never over water....in fact you can safely forget about them if you go on holiday. You may get a new stem? I would say cut the old stem out so all energy goes to new stem....don't forget these plants are tropical so treat them as such, try putting in the bathroom it will love the steam.

If the stem is brown and dead, then just cut it off.

You need to offer it some plant food - then water it.
