I wish I didn't have to go to work today...that's every day though...my boss is the worst...talks to everyone like they are less than human...I'll be glad when I find something better.

OK, you asked for it. The Human T-cell leukemia virus is an RNA or "retrovirus", so called because the flow of genetic information is reversed from what was formerly the "central dogma" of molecular biology in that the genetic information flows from RNA to DNA, and not the other way around, which is the more usual way of flow of genetic information. The virus has been found in the bodies of 400 year-old Andean mummies and is endemic to southern Japan where the infection rate is about 31%. The discovery of this led to the discovery of the HIV virus, which is also a retrovirus, and is in the same family as "HTLV", the abbreviation for the virus. Howard Temin and David Baltimore received the Nobel Prize for their discovery, after being ridiculed for years that such a thing was not possible. This virus is the first virus ever proven to cause cancer. Persons who are infected with this virus usually do not have to worry much as it tends to only affect the very old, but not in all cases. There are now treatments for this virus, but before that if there was a diagnosis of this type of leukemia it usually meant a six months to live prognosis. There are also different types of this virus - four are currently known and they are numbered using Roman numerals. For unknown reasons it is also highly prevalent in some Native American tribes. It is also highly prevalent in the Caribbean area. It is called a "complex" retrovirus because it has 5 genes instead of the less complex 3. The five genes in HTLV are tax, rex, gag, pol, and env, each one encoding for a different purpose. One of the medications for this virus, zidovudine, better known as AZT, is also used as a medicine for AIDS, and (last I heard) costs $25,000 a year. I doubt very much this is what you were expecting for an answer, but I think your question is GREAT!!! Thanks for letting me play "lecturer" for a while - test in 2 weeks --- ;)

You will probably be surprised if I tell you that it is not as easy as it sounds. Consider this, what if I tell you something absolutely inapropriate and thus hurt your feelings?
