depends on your doctor. my pap smear was done when I was about 10 weeks along. they check for all kinds of problems. It doesn't hurt that much, but it will hurt a bit.

There is NO reason to have an internal done! You don't have to do it!!! First, they introduce germs into your vagina..why would you want that?? Second, WOW, they can tell you that you are effaced..and 1cm dialated...BUT you may not deliver for awhile, so really, what are they telling you?!! Nothing! YOUR BODY knows when to deliver this baby!
And third, it CAN send you into labor! You can go in there at 37 weeks and haev one done, and go into labor the next day...even though you only have a 37 weeker! You say "well it's ONLY 3 weeks early, that isn't bad" WELL...if you are not POSITIVE of the exact day of conception, then you could deliver a baby that is 3-6 weeks early!!
Internals are something that DR's do...basically to write it on teh chart and get money from your Ins. company! There is NO research that shows internals HAVE to be done for such and such a reason!!

Research it! Call a midwife/doula...But I suggest NOT getting one!! My old boss went into labor with BOTH of her girls 2 hours AFTER her internal! Inturn she had a 2 week early baby and a 3.5 week early baby!!!

I think they do it for the first time at around 37 weeks, unless you are showing signs of possible labor sooner than that. Its uncomfortable, but it shouldn't be too painful...the dr checks to see if you are dialiated or effaced by inserting his fingers "up there". If the dr knows what they are doing, it shouldn't hurt. Good luck!

If you are refering to when you go into labour... they checked me many times to see how far dilated I was. One midwife hurt me so much, tears streamed down my face. Yet the others were so gentle, I felt nothing. I have decided this time around - not to let them do anything I don't like. I will tell them to stop if its hurting me. If they can't do it gently, then they aint doing it atall!!! Remember, it's your body!
