If I were you I'd check with a hair stylist before I got anything done and PLEASE if you are under 20 years old do NOT try to dye it yourself. I've seen too many girls go in a salon in tears because off what box dyes have done to their hair. It's the dye's fault not theirs. Anyways, now that we have that out of the way.
Browns are really in this year. Blond is still hott but quickly fading. If you tried a brown with very subtle auburnish undertones, you would be right up there with the celebs. Then again, it all depends on your skin and eye color. As well as the make-up ypu wear.
My suggestion? Go to a salon and find a hair dresser you REALLY like. After getting your hair cut by him/her a couple of times and letting them get to know you then ask their opinion. It is way better to have a hair stylist who knows you recommend something than a hairstylist who only knows what he/she likes. Plus, you get a good friend who can stlye hair out of it :P. Good luck.

I've seen tons of people with the "trendy" color that looks bad on them. Work with your skin and your fashion choices to make the best choice. Looking good is better than being in fashion.
