Bonsai trees are just regular trees planted in small pots to keep them small. They also need "training" to achieve a desires shape and pruning for shape and size as well. Japanese Maple, Flowering Cherry, Flowering Crab Apple, Silver Birch, and Cottoneaster are some good varieties of deciduous trees that will make good bonsai. You'll want to choose trees with small leaves so they do look like mini trees. Black Pine, Juniper, White Pine, Holly, Dwarf Cedar, and Scot's Pine are a few good evergreen varieties. Shrubs like Azalea and Rhododendron also work very well. As long as you start out with something very small, about 4-10 inches, the possibilities are endless. One good place to get seedlings is Musser Forests. They sell seedlings that are small and you can get quite a few at low prices. Best of Luck!!!

My mother has an extenisve bonsai collection, all but one that she's done herself. This is a technique she learned from a very knowledgeable nursery owner, many years ago. It has to do with cutting the roots to keep the plant small. She's done it with a baby pine tree and many others. I suggest visiting local nurseries and when you find one with a good selection of bonsai plants - develop a working relationship with the person who cares for them. You will gain lots of insight and knowledge about these plants. Also look into any botanical gardens in your area, many have bonsai gardens.

They can grow any where. My brother grows them for a hobby, he also took a class in them. Just do a search for Bonsai and you can order some on line.

They will grow anywhere. They are just small varities of trees. You can make them yourself. Start out with an azalea bush and try your luck.
