Don't stay in bed...If you can't sleep, get up and do something simple, like laundry, that could tire you out, then try again.
You could try a turkey sandwich and a glass of warm milk before bed, but this has never worked for me and you're supposed to have it on an empty stomach.
Avoid exercise too late in the day, and take a warm bath to help you relax.
Sleeping pills and the like aren't effective for long, and could be addictive to boot. If you do take some, make sure you only do so occasionally.
There're a lot of websites explaining different types of sleep disorders and common sleep problems, also some remedies.
Here's one:

Count Sheep! Just kidding... to get you in the routine go to a health food store and buy melatonin or take some Tylenol PM. But just for a few days to get you into the swing of things. Also...make the room very dark with no noises. Or what I do everynight...watch Nick At Night (like old sitcoms...)
Good Luck

This usually works for me.. I'll turn my body around so that my head is usually at the foot of the bed. If that doesn't work, I'll ask myself.. 'am I doing everything I can so I can fall asleep?' and usually it just helps me reposition my arms, legs, head, back to make sure I'm really really comfortable... oh, and I NEVER look at the clock when I can't sleep.

Keep on playing with your computer! If your eyes still hurt, lay back down again a maybe you'll be able to rest your eyes & listen to some JACK FM or ABC Classic FM Widgets. Heck, you're probably already asleep but thanks for the extra 2 points!!

The longer you lay in bed freakin out that you can't sleep the longer it's gonna be before you can go to sleep. Just go sit in a chair and listen to some music. Don't watch t.v. something about it being to visually stimulating or something will make it hard to go to sleep too. Just try to calm down and don't think about it.

I astral travel. That is: I hop on a cloud and float through the sky gazing down on the earth. When I see something interesting I land to check it out. By that time I'm asleep.

benadryl works like a charm, take 2 of them (or more depending on how much time you have to sleep). Or, you could consider eating something with a high amount of fat grams, that will usually put you out like a light.
