And is there a linear relationship between the amount of people and the amount of land?

Depends a lot on the "quality" of the land. When people were moving west in our country they were rather shocked at how much land was needed to sustain a cow in Texas vs. Pennsylvania. I don't remember exactly but it was like 20 acres in arid parts of Texas vs. 1&1/2 acres in Pennsylvania.

About an acre, if it contains a grocery store.

i think it should be not less than 30 sq meters ,, and no i don't think its linear ,, we have horizontal and vertical expansion
